Transverse plane transabdominal ultrasound will show a rounded structure occupying the vaginal cavity that is isoechoic in comparison to the surrounding tissues, an appearance that can mimic a solid lesion. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it will appear as hypointense on T1- weighted sequences. The inside of this structure is usually lucent/hypodense due to trapped air but occasionally there will be an air-fluid level when menses is present. On imaging studies, it typically presents as a high-attenuation, cup-shaped or U-shaped structure on conventional radiography or computed tomography (CT). With the development of smaller and more flexible cups, made of silicone or rubber, this dispositive is now widely available and increasingly accepted among women, especially those who want to avoid the environmental burden associated with disposable pads and tampons. Īlthough its origin dates back to 1864, the initial models were bulky and cumbersome. After menstruation, the cup is removed and emptied, and can then be cleaned for future use. It is inserted in the vagina during menstruation and collects the menstrual flow, instead of absorbing it. Menstrual cup is a reusable female hygiene product, serving as a more environmentally friendly alternative to tampons and other disposable products.
